Alive or dead?

I'm assuming that these were empty shells as mussels usually live attached to something, a rock or breakwater etc, rather than being free in the sand like cockles do.

Empty shells

Hi, the shells were empty. I should really have stated "mussel shells" in the subject heading as that was the main focus of my observation here. I'm not very familiar with ispot yet but i'll try to edit the heading.

Mussel ID

I seem to recall hearing somewhere that the different species of Mussel cannot be reliably identified from external features.

However I have agreed with the ID suggested as that is what I would normally call this species.
