Edible plant?

Edible plant?
Description:

The fresh, new leaves of this woodland floor growing plant were being picked by a Chinese Gentleman who did not speak English. He communicated to me by gestures that he was going to cook and then eat them. He only picked the smaller leaves and had two carrier bags full of them. Does anyone recognise the plant?

Used

It was used by native Americans for headache's and inflammation as it contains petasin and isopetasin. This tends to be more concentrated in the rhizomes and stalk, so maybe that is why he was picking the young leaves as they would be less cocentrated.I have a book on herb's and there uses but would not try any myself except arnica for bruising.
