Garden Hellebores

It is impossible to place these plants to species level on the basis of a photograph. An enormous amount of hybridisation has been carried out by plant breeders to produce a greater range of colours and plants which consistently show more flowers. Add in the desire to develop more doubles and the quest for upturned flowers and you have a genetic hotch-potch. There is a well-known group of plants that goes under the heading of the "Ballard strain" and there are many others that have come from John Massey at Ashwood Nursery. Helleborus orientalis is in both lines, but diluted by crossing.
