A winter Larch. New leaves just starting to show. Some cones, looking rather weather-beaten, are still on the tree.

Species with which Larch (Larix decidua) interacts

Larix x marschlinsii ??

I'm inclined to think this may be the hybrid. The cone scales are a little recurved for L. decidua although the cone shape is right. Which is what one would expect in the hybrid. However it's a bit marginal on the basis of a single cone. The general rule is, of course, recurved scales and football shaped cones - L. kaempferi, non-recurved scales and oval cones, L. decidua, anything between is hybrid. But that's a bit of a simplification.

Thank you for your comment. Does the cone scale shape change with age and prevailing conditions?
