Description:

Large fern, with leaves approx. 2 feet in length. Many in the wood had been flattened by snow, but this example was still upright.

Thumbs

I was taught that Shield Ferns had "thumbs"- well illustrated in third photograph

Thanks for sorting that one out. Shield Fern has passed through my mind, but I was taken in by the overall shape of the leaves rather than the detail and the "thumbs".
