Description:

Great Tit with large tumour on leg. The bird was caught during a ringing session and despite, the huge tumour, it appeared to be in good health overall without any apparent distress. When released, it flew off well but did appear to be rather weighed down. Any suggestions as to what might have caused this are most welcome.

Tumour.

Hello, Paul. Did the tumour seem hard or was it flocculent, as if a fluid filled cyst? The little marks on the lesion look as though the tit has been pecking at it, & there is a suggestion of discharge in the first photo. The immediately related leg structure doesn't show any sign of spreading inflammation so it wouldn't seem to be an infection.

The tumour did seem hard but there was some discharge coming from it - A clear liquid.

Tumour.

I showed this to a surgeon (for humans, not a vet): he thought it probably a chondroma- a tumour of the cartilege. How harmful or common they are amongst birds we couldnt say.

Thanks for the information - Lets' hope the bird survives.
