Mystery puffball?

Description:

Withered, soft, very light-weight fungus, and puffing spores from a gash in the cap when found on 20 Feb. Several specimens nearby. The skin of the soft 'stalk' resisted being cut with a penknife.

I don't think this is a

I don't think this is a puffball, but a mummified 'normal' cap fungus, possibly even infected with another fungus (e.g. a mould). Can you tell if it had gills or pores under the cap? That might narrow things down a bit but you might just have to settle for 'fungus' as the ID.
