Description:

Orchid growing on wet meadow . The meadow is only about 16 years old.It is a reclaimed colliery waste tip with less than a foot of soil. The colliery waste acts like rock and holds water so the soil gets waterlogged.Three years ago I first noticed there were about twenty orchids flowering. Each summer since the grass has been mown before the orchids can set seed. The plants get shredded but instead of being destroyed they are thriving and last year I counted 130 flower spikes
