Description:

This insect seems like it's over-eaten on pollen - it stayed for ages with what you could swear was a grin on its face! It was mid afternoon in the autumn, not too many flowers left in bloom. I've been meaning to ask what this is for two years!

Yes. There is no more growth once these things emerge from the pupa - and this beast is enormous compared with some hoverflies!
