Unknown small grebe

Observed: 6th February 2011 By: wil7317

Small black and white grebe with long thin neck swimming and diving close to shore in quite rough conditions. didn't get a photo but another description could be a small merganser/grebe like bird, black and white in more of a pied wagtail pattern than the black and white of grebes like the female black necked grebe which comes closest in my bird book. I'm guessing it was a black necked grebe?

  • Black necked grebe
Confidence: It's likely to be this, but I can't be certain.

Could be any one of the 4 black and white grebes that are seen off the British coasts. Probably not red-necked as they are the rarest and don't normally look strikingly black and white. Great crested is the most likely, but doesn't show much black. Could be a black-necked but these are really tiny and don't have particularly long necks. If it wasn't a great crested I'd go for slavonian grebe on the basis that you remarked on its black and white colouration. Probably not possible to be sure though.

More details needed.

There is not enough detail in the description to allow an identification I'm afraid.

Apart from the species already mentioned, other possibilities could include divers (not particularly small, but size can be difficult to judge), Goldeneye, Long-tailed Duck, Guillemot, and Razorbill.
