Mating seasons for robins already?

Observed: 2nd February 2011 By: George WGeorge W’s reputation in BirdsGeorge W’s reputation in BirdsGeorge W’s reputation in Birds

My understanding is that robins, both male and female, are strongly territorial and will not tollerate another robin, of either sex, in their territory. I took this photo today (Feb 2nd) which would suggest that the robin's mating season has already started.

Mating already

As far as I know, it is rather early. I did see a pair of Robins involved in courtship feeding at the end of March 2009; much later in the year than your record of course.

They do ...

... seem early this year; my garden robin is tolerating another's presence (presumably a potential mate) and has been for a week or two.
