If there were pores rather

If there were pores rather than gills then you have a member of the Bolete family. Unfortunately whatever it was it has been attacked by probably something like Hypomyces chrysospermus. This will have taken all the identifying features away so you will not find a "look alike" in your books.

I am realising that I need as

I am realising that I need as much info as possible however it is tricky when they are close to the ground and I dont want to root them up. I will have to go armed with a mirror or something in future !
