Description:

5 sparrows can be seen in this photo. If I tried to shoot a larger area the birds would be too small to be seen. I regularly have around 18 House Sparrows visiting my garden.

Sadly they are.

Although there are pockets about (my local nature park has a healthy population) these are fewer with smaller flock sizes. I monitor a number of squares for the BTO's Atlas scheme, in two of them I consider myself lucky if I observe any.

It is a similar story with starlings – they appear numerous so people assume the population is healthy when in fact they are crashing. Down 66% since the 1970s (www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/s/starling/population_conservati...)

I'm yet to see a garden house sparrow in Oxford, after living here for 3 years
