Arge pagana, the Large Rose Sawfly, can look rather similar. How does one tell? Dimensions?
I am by no means an expert and so the following may be entirely wrong! I think that the large rose sawfly has an entirely yellow abdomen whilst the fungus gnat has a black strip on the underside. Also, I think that the wings of the sawfly are transparent enough to let the yellow abdomen be seen through them from above.
Thank for the comment Colin. Your images had immediately reminded me of two that I had provisionally filed under sawflies. I have dug them out and hope to put them up shortly.
