grass snake (3)
Description:

I saw this snake on an old colliery waste tip.
Grassland is a poor description of the habitat ,it is mostly bare shale with some scrubby trees and sparse patches of grass. My dog found the snake out in the open and it was It unable to flee for cover. It coiled up and struck out at me and my dog.It was a quite effective bluff.I have seen grass snakes in the area since but usually only their tails as they head for cover.

Good photo -

they do like any rough grassland, especially if it is damp. Excellent specimen.
