Description:

About 3/4cm - 1cm long hanging from a tree by a long thread lowering itself to the ground.

A tortrix moth?

This is their "escape mechanism" for when birds are foraging in the canopy of a woodland. They can later haul themselves back up to continue feeding.
The tree it was hanging from could be a clue to the species.
