Description:

Huge insect - body alone over 2 inches long, with a tail extending beyond that. Squatting on a piece of cut timber in an area of clearfell.

... which is not a wasp, but

... which is not a wasp, but a sawfly, despite one of the common names. The 'tail' is an ovipositor, not a sting, and the beast is harmless.
