When we were on holiday in Sweden, we found many traces of beavers. This piece of wood really puzzled us. Why does it have this shape? The log has a diameter of 10 cm.

Interesting. I found a very similar thing in England. There were definitely no beavers around. Mine might have been done by a squirrel.

I just found out myself by looking at the website of the Encyclopedia of Life. The first picture shows something similar. But there is still the mystery of the "gnawed wood" in England to be solved.
Certainly looks like something a beaver would do, I assume you found out it is to help wear down their teeth. Which is exactly what the one in England would be. I've had a look at that one and think it is probably squirrel.
