Beetle 12-4-09 Dartmoor

I was walking along a wooded path on Dartmoor and I spotted this beetle. It was mainly black, had a purplish tint on its underside and was approximately 2.5 cm in length and 1 cm wide. I took this rather bad photo and video on my phone, apologies for the quality, my camera ran out of batteries. Has anyone got any idea what it is?
