Description:

These were seen around a pond running along the edge in my local woods. The pond is a regular watering hole for Muntjac and where a family of Moorhens live.

Spot on. If you can easily see the ears from a distance you're unlikely to be looking at a water vole. Tail of a rat is long (as long as the head and body) rather than short and hairy with a water vole.
