Description:

This was found in a hedge by a river. When crushed it releases a powerful smell that I can't really describe (helpful I know).

Ground Ivy

The leaf certainly looks like this - and the reported odour is certainly a pointer, too.
It was used as a flavouring and preservative for beer before the introduction of the "Flemmish Weed" (Humulus lupulus, the Hop).
