Description:

We have had male and female Blackbirds, Redwings and a Thrush in the garden today but this one has more red/rust on it than I have seen before. Is it a Scandinavian Blackbird of some kind? The photo also shows a male Blackbird for comparison.

orange black bird

I've checked the literature on geographical races of blackbird (well, I looked through my copy of the Helm Identification Guide on Thrushes) and there are no other races in Northern Europe. The Asian races of blackbird do not show this colouration so it must just be an extremely bright bird. I've never seen such an orange one though. There are plenty of other thrush species in Asia that can turn up in this country (dusky thrush for example) so it's always worth checking through flocks of thrushes in the winter.
