it's a boy!

This is indeed a male vapourer moth.
The female looks quite different - in fact she is wingless, and just sits around waiting to be discovered by a winged male, following which she lays her eggs on the outside of the cocoon she hatched from.
The adults are about between the summer and autumn, although in Scotland are generally found in September-October time.
