I was told by a spotter on the day and he thought it was a Gadwall
Looks like gadwall to me too, but I'm not sure why! Probably its compact shape, which would depend on the bird's posture so not really a reliable feature. Most female gadwall would show more yellow on the bill and less white in the tail than this bird does, but still it reminds me of a gadwall. Any more photos?
