I think it's quite likely the beetle did the artistic nibbling as that's the sort of plant they like to eat...

Not quite as amazing as it

Not quite as amazing as it might seem, if the nibbling happened when the leaf was folded down its midrib. You quite often get symmetrical damage to leaves caused this way.

Markeaton Park

was once a popular "courting" venue (being polite), but seldom this romantic. Great shot!
Now, if it had fur or feathers, this would be a dead cert for the ad agencies!
