Description:

What is this insect? I found it near some Assassin Bug nymphs (Arilus cristatus) but this doesn't really look like them.

Could be...

It is certainly some sort of bug but a very juvenile stage so a firm identification may be impossible. Looking at images of Arilus cristatus I think your supposition is correct and I can imagine this maturing into that species. But as its a American species its not something that I have any experience of.
