size

Andy,

Just after putting up the second identification I saw that you had given the size, which makes it much more likely to be P. spumarius as you originally suggested. Apologies for casting doubt on it!

Instinct correct?

Despite the size being wrong, I think your instinct for A. alni is correct. As well as the classic white patches that I believe P. spumarius can mimic pretty well it also has the right shape for alni including the more elongate endings to the forewings. And more subtle markings like the dark spots on the anal veins. (Can spumarius mimic those?)

The jizz of the specimen outweighs the aberrant size for me. (But I'm not an expert.)
