Description:

Following the feature on the Turnstone eating mealworms on Auttumn Watch I thought this photo taken last winter shows how birds adapt during severe weather. Has anyone else seen such behaviour?

Yes, at Padstow in Cornwall.

Yes, at Padstow in Cornwall. I also saw Autumn watch and immediately thought of the Turnstones in Padstow.

Turnstone diet

Turnstones are famously catholic in their tastes and will seemingly eat just about anything. There was a series of letters published in British Birds in the 1970s or 80s in which they were reported feeding on such diverse treats (!) as soap bars and a human corpse, I believe.
