They cannot be very commonly seen at all in Lairg, can they? It is certainly well inland.
Judging from your location, they were actually off Faraid Head,near Durness, where they are very common!
It always seems odd that locations in that NW corner of Scotland are said to be 'Nr Lairg'!!

Yes, Faraid Head it certainly was - what a great place!
Just about my favourite place for wildlife. Spend the morning around the golf course at Durness, and then cross Balnakiel Bay and on to Faraid Head...
